Darius Yektai Far Off Gaze Of My Friend 2023 Oil and resin on linen 36 x 48"
“I push painting towards sculpture and sculpture towards painting. And explore the ground between them, what makes one different than the other. What I have discovered is that it is in the similarities that the dialogue is found : where material and process couple with illusion and physicality. This is narrative work and the narrative is the activity built into the work around the questions “how to paint” “what to paint” and “why to paint”… yea You are rewarded for looking.” - Darius Yektai
Darius Yektai was born in Southampton, New York, in 1973. He lives and works out of his home and studio in Sag Harbor. Darius grew up in a cultural home of artists with his Greek-American mother and his father, Manoucher Yektai, a Persian-American artist and founding member of the New York School of Abstract Expressionism.
Darius creates sculptural paintings that can’t be read from left to right — they provoke examination from all directions; from surface to base, section to section, and then, overall, as an encompassing whole. His most recent body of work introduces unconventional materials such as foam core, tape, and resin to the canvas, enlivening their painterly abstractions through illusion and physicality.
