Christine Keefe

Christine Keefe’s paintings juxtapose personal, political, and social subject matter pulled from both her own photography and appropriated imagery. Fragmentary landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and color fields overlap and intersect, forming dynamic compositions that are narratively-charged while evading explicit interpretation. Her technique combines illusionism and flatness; representational images and fluid, soft contours are contained and dissected by hard, tapered edges, suggesting a controlled approach.

Keefe’s visual language draws on elements of New Realism and Abstract Expressionism. She effortlessly brings photographic elements into and out of focus, alternating between structured reality and lyrical abstraction. In some instances, including her Flag series, gestural lines and mark making come to the foreground, creating surface tensions that reverberate throughout the painting.

Keefe is based in New York City and Bridgehampton, NY. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States, and internationally with Stockholm-based Wetterling Gallery. She holds a BFA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts, NYC.
