Muralist, sculpture, genre and landscape painter, illustrator, lithographer, and jeweler, Chavez was a true artist and craftsman who explored a variety of mediums throughout his lengthy career. Chavez explained his work as “a means of giving some semblance of dignity and even sanity and meaning to a world too often obsessed with material concerns, with false values and meaningless goals.” His exploration of abstract sculpture began largely within the postwar era, and was often inspired by ancient mythology or specific geographical locations.
